I had the privilege to attend Prof. Jan Rabaey's enlightening talk at Design, Automation and Test in Europe Conference (DATE) 2023 in April at Antwerp Belgium, titled "Bringing the Magic Back to Design." Prof. Rabaey’s keynote offered a comprehensive exploration of electronic design automation (EDA). Here are the key highlights:
✨ Engaging Students: Emphasizing the need to rekindle excitement in electronic design through innovative contests, activities, and worldwide chapters.
🧩 Freedom of Choice in Design: Prof. Rabaey reflected on how restricting design options led to innovation, introducing the idea of "Freedom from choice."
📜 Evolution of Design Methodology: Tracing the history of design automation back to the 1970s and 1980s, he highlighted the impact of design rules, separation of manufacturing and design, and open-source methodologies.
🪄 Restoring the Magic in Design: Prof. Rabaey called for a new vision to make electronic design exciting again, focusing on emerging technologies such as 3D integration, extreme heterogeneity, and advanced packaging.
🤖 AI in Chip Design: He extensively discussed the potential role of AI in designing the next generation of chips and computers, and the importance of AI in design automation.
🤝 Semiconductor Commons and Collaboration: Introducing collaborative labs for prototyping and integration, with an emphasis on cloud computing to accelerate innovation.
🚀 Moonshot Ideas: Prof. Rabaey concluded by stressing the need for transformative ideas, the role of societal concerns, and technological innovation in driving the industry forward.
💡 Closing Thoughts: He expressed hope that someone in the audience would generate the next version of a transformative idea, encapsulating the inspiring and forward-thinking nature of his talk.
Prof. Rabaey's address provided a thoughtful examination of the challenges and opportunities in the EDA landscape, coupled with an inspiring vision for restoring the excitement and magic in design. His insights offer a valuable perspective for professionals, students, and anyone interested in the future of technology and innovation.

I was absolutely delighted to be asked to speak on a panel at Equate Scotland's student conference yesterday.
Myself and my fellow panelists Gule Saman and Louise Juul Mousten were talking about networks and the importance of networking. We shared stories of starting our own networks in the community and in our companies and answered student questions about how networks contributed to diversity and equality.
It was clear from the questions we answered, that networks and networking events can seem daunting to those just starting out in their careers, so let's make sure we're making people welcome in our community groups.
A few things I recommend for network leads:
✅ For in-person meetups take the time to recognise newcomers and offer to introduce them to people they might like to meet
✅ Update your community pages to call out that new members are welcome
✅ Look for ways to showcase members, speakers and organisers from different backgrounds in your community group - people are more likely to attend if they can see themselves reflected in the network.
What else would you suggest to make networks and community groups less intimidating for new people?

📢 Invitation to the SCRIPTS Roundtable on Oct 17 at Freie Universität Berlin:
Diversity seems to be the new rising paradigm within German research policies. Proponents of the diversity turn examine the seeming meritocracy of the university critically and propose a more inclusive notion of research, whereas critiques focus on alleged anti-merit-based diversity policies. In this heated exchange on principles, the scientific evidence behind the justification for diversity is often overlooked if not strategically disregarded.
These and other issues will be addressed in the upcoming roundtable by the Cluster of Excellence SCRIPTS (FU Berlin). SCRIPTS Principal Investigators Gülay Çağlar (FU) and Kathrin Zippel (FU) discuss together with Andrea D. Bührmann (Göttingen Diversity Research Institute), and Julian Hamann (HU) controversial issues and choose the format of a cluster of excellence as a case study.
You are cordially invited to join our roundtable on site, Oct 17, 14-16h at Room 2.2051 in the Holzlaube of the FU Berlin. If you are not in Berlin, it is of course also possible to participate via WebEx. You will find all information here: https://lnkd.in/enGUNGV7
We look forward to seeing you there!
